Tasting Notes
"Cont'Ugo" displays a deep ruby red color. On the nose, it offers a rich aromatic bouquet of ripe red fruits, such as cherries and plums, enriched with spicy notes of black pepper, licorice, and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, the wine is medium-full bodied, with soft tannins and good acidity that lends freshness and length to the finish. Its balanced structure suggests an aging potential of at least 5-7 years.
Pairings
This Merlot pairs perfectly with red meat dishes, such as roast beef or lamb, and with aged cheeses. It's also ideal with traditional Italian dishes, such as porcini mushroom risotto or Florentine steak.
Winery - Guado al Tasso Estate, Antinori
Tenuta Guado al Tasso is one of the Antinori family's most prestigious properties, located in the renowned Bolgheri DOC appellation on the coast of the Maremma region of Tuscany. This estate boasts a fascinating history that blends tradition and innovation, significantly contributing to the international success of Tuscan wines. The roots of viticulture in the Bolgheri area date back to the late 17th century, when the noble Della Gherardesca family began cultivating their lands. However, it was under the leadership of Guido Alberto Della Gherardesca (1780-1854), a wine enthusiast and butler to Grand Duke Leopold II, that viticulture in the region experienced significant development. In 1932, Carlotta Della Gherardesca, mother of Piero Antinori, inherited the property and presented it as a dowry to her husband Niccolò Antinori, marking the beginning of the Antinori family's influence in the area. In the years that followed, the Antinori family invested in modernizing and expanding the estate, introducing innovative viticultural practices and focusing on international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. This vision led to the creation of prestigious labels, including the Bolgheri Rosso DOC "Il Bruciato," a wine that expresses the excellence of the terroir and the estate's production philosophy. The Guado al Tasso estate extends across 320 hectares of vineyards, located on a plain surrounded by hills that form the "Bolgheri Amphitheater," an area that benefits from an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The alluvial soils, varying from sandy-clayey to siliceous-clayey, with fine gravel, contribute to the complexity and quality of the wines produced. The Antinori family, today represented by Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia Antinori, continues to guide the estate with an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation, while maintaining a profound respect for tradition and the terroir. This balance has allowed Tenuta Guado al Tasso to establish itself as a point of reference in the international winemaking scene.
